Overview of the EAST AFIRCAN RIFT VALLEY SYSTEM (click on the map for an enlarged view)

The two branches of East Africa's Rift Valley system slice southwards through the continent for a distance of 5600 km. This site describes the 500 km Albertine section of the Western Rift Valley on the Uganda - Congo border

Part One explores the valley's main features between the Virunga volcanoes and Murchison Falls on the Nile. These provide the setting for a long and fascinating history described in Part Two. This wide-ranging section encompasses earthquakes and volcanoes; fossils (dead and alive) and human evolution; the birth of the River Nile; lions, gorillas and an unexpected tiger; pagan kingdoms and Victorian explorers; fat women and revered cows; Africa's first national park, and the mystery of the missing toilet bowls.

The Ugandan rift is a region of fabulous beauty and variety in which Central African forests merge with the grasslands of East Africa to support an unrivalled biodiversity. This is protected by a series of parks and reserves notably the Queen Elizabeth and Semliki National Parks which are described in Part Three
